Did you know that speed skating champ Ireen Wüst is the youngest Dutch Winter Olympic medalist in history?

At the age of 19 she won gold in the 3,000m race in Turin in 2006. She also took home the bronze medal in the 1,500m race in at the same Winter Olympics.

Ireen Wüst: the speed skating Queen of the Netherlands

  • born 1 April 1986 in Goirle, North Brabant
  • the most successful athlete of the Netherlands ever at the Olympics (5x gold, 4x silver and 1x bronze)
  • she also holds titles as a world all-round champion (6x), European all-round champion (5x) and world single distance champion (12x)
  • the Winter Olympics in South Korea are her fourth Olympics (after Turin 2006, Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014)
  • named Sportswoman of the Year 2014 by Reuters
  • Ireen is openly gay and her partner Letitia de Jong is also a competitive speed skater
  • the 400m indoor ice rink in Tilburg is named after Ireen Wüst
