Dutch highlights of Olympics day 1

The day after the opening of the Winter Olympics 2018 the Netherlands is second in the country medal ranking. TeamNL thrived in speed skating with four medals: 1x gold, 2x silver and 1x bronze.

Dutch one-two-three

In the women’s 3,000m speed skating it was gold, silver and bronze for the Netherlands. Outsider Carlijn Achtereeke took the first place, after Ireen Wüst (silver) and Antoinette de Jong (bronze). This is Carlijn’s first Olympic medal.

Silver for Sjinkie

Speed skater Sjinkie Knegt from Friesland won silver at the men’s 1,500m. He was beat by Hyojun Lim (South Korea), who set an Olympic Record of 2.10.485.

Selfie time for the King and Queen

After a two day working visit to China, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima continued their Asian tour to South Korea. In between cheering for TeamNL they have time to make selfies to send to their daughters Amalia (14), Alexia (12) and Ariane (10) back home.

Celebration in Carlijn Achtereekte’s hometown Lettele

Speed skater Carlijn Achtereekte surprised everybody by winning gold at the women’s 3,000m. In her hometown Lettele (population: 600) near Deventer neighbours raised the Dutch flag to celebrate her victory. When Carlijn returns home after the Winter Games she will await a frantic tribute.
