Sinterklaas

Did you know that the figure of Santa Claus is based on Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children? Back in the 4th century he became the Bishop of Myra in Turkey. He hailed from a rich home and became widely known for supporting the poor and needy and would often be seen, dressed in red and white robes, handing out gifts to children. The Dutch celebrate the evening of his feast day with a celebration of exchanging gifts, called ‘pakjesavond’ (boxing evening) on 5 December.
