Dedication to KLM’s MD-11 aircraft
Before retiring Rien Moerland worked at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol installing scaffolds for aircraft maintenance. In his job he saw a lot of aircrafts up close, but with the McDonnell Douglas 11 (MD-11) it was love at first sight.
“What made this aircraft so beautiful? The he high mounted tail engine, the massive cockpit windows and the spacious rear galley. Marvelous!” KLM was the last airline to operate commercial passenger flights with a MD-11. And of course, Rien was on board of that retirement flight in 2014.
Rien’s living room is furnished with MD-11 business class seats and KLM trolleys. Whenever he gets the chance, Rien is in the air. In the past he flew up and down to the USA or Canada in one day, from Amsterdam to New York, Atlanta or Montreal. Once he traveled 40,000km in the air in just 14 days: from Amsterdam to Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, Auckland, Sydney, Dubai and back to Amsterdam.
